It has been another full and rewarding week at Como Secondary College, with a range of activities and opportunities that continue to bring our community together and enrich the experience of our students.
Our Reconciliation Week Assembly was a genuine highlight. It was a respectful and meaningful occasion, thoughtfully led and well supported by staff and students. It provided us all with an opportunity to reflect on our shared history, acknowledge the strength and resilience of Aboriginal peoples, and consider our role in continuing to build understanding, respect and reconciliation. These reflections were further deepened by last week’s City of South Perth Reconciliation Walk, where students and staff had the opportunity to hear local Aboriginal stories and histories. In particular, learning about events connected to the old Mill and the theft of flour, which became a significant historical precursor to the Pinjarra Massacre, was a powerful reminder of the importance of truth-telling and understanding the local context of our shared past. Moments like these are important in shaping the culture of our school and reinforcing the values that underpin The Como Way.
With the colder weather now firmly with us, a timely reminder about uniform expectations. Students are expected to be in full school uniform each day, including appropriate outerwear. We have been working closely with families to ensure students are well prepared for winter, and I appreciate your ongoing support in maintaining high standards of presentation. In response to student feedback, Uniform Concepts are now stocking both the Lower School and Senior School Rugby Jumpers, which I know many students have been asking for. A quick reminder as well about ball games at break times. We ask students to be mindful of others and respectful of our grounds by taking these activities to the oval. The shaded areas and regular foot traffic are already placing the grass under pressure, and we want to avoid muddy patches developing in spaces where students sit and gather. Your support in reinforcing this with students is appreciated.
As mentioned last week, communication continues to be an important focus for us. We know how critical it is that we work in partnership with parents and carers to support the best possible outcomes for students. Over the coming weeks we will be reviewing our communication practices to ensure they are clear, timely and effective. As always, we welcome feedback as part of this process, your perspectives help us get this right.
Our latest OLNA results have come through, and it is very pleasing to see students continuing to make strong progress. This reflects the consistent efforts of both students and staff. Individual results are available, and families are encouraged to make contact if they would like further information or to discuss next steps.
Learning beyond the classroom has also been a feature this week. Excursions to UWA and our ongoing Trade Taster programs are helping students see the breadth of opportunities available to them beyond school. These experiences play an important role in building aspirations and helping students make informed decisions about their future pathways.
And finally, for those who follow the footy, it has been great to see football in WA looking healthy again. West Perth notched their first win of the season in the real WAFL Derby, and the Eagles are starting to build some momentum. Happy days indeed! (we don’t talk about the other mob from down south 😋)
