Mathematics at Como Secondary College aims to develop the capabilities of all students so they can become confident, creative users and communicators of mathematics. They will be able to investigate, represent and interpret situations in their personal lives, work lives, and as active citizens.
Starting in 2026, Como Secondary College will be delivering the new Western Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, which provides students with essential mathematical skills and knowledge in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Probability and Statistics. We know that Mathematics is composed of multiple but interrelated and interdependent concepts and systems, and at Como Secondary College, students will engage in Mathematics classes and programs that aim to increase students understanding and capabilities to become self-motivated and confident mathematics learners for life.

Pathways in the Mathematics
To cater to the students’ different abilities, the Mathematics Learning Area groups students into pathways starting in Year 9 to best support their future aspirations. Our Pathway 1 programs are intended for students who are likely to undertake an ATAR pathway in Year 11 and 12. These programs include ‘optional’ content from the new curriculum which is advantageous for students who are looking to study Mathematics Methods or Mathematics Specialist. The Pathway 2 course does not include this ‘optional’ content, but may still lead to an ATAR pathway, particularly Mathematics Application. It is anticipated that most students in the Pathway 2 and Pathway 3 classes will pursue a General Mathematics course in Year 11.
Como Secondary College also offers a selective entry Specialist Enriched Mathematics, Information Technology and Science (EMITS) program. The EMITS program offers students with a passion for mathematics a range of exciting enrichment opportunities that allow students to hone their mathematics skills in Years 7 to 10. It’s designed to equip students with a comprehensive set of skills to help them take on the challenges of ATAR studies, as well as prepare them for other tertiary opportunities they might aspire to.
