The Specialist Golf Program provides students with the opportunity to develop their golf, broaden their understanding of the game and build a strong foundation for their future.
Designed for students with developing skills who are committed to improving, the program combines structured practice, small-group instruction, on-course play, competition and learning across all aspects of the game.
Students are timetabled for four hours of Specialist Golf each week, with learning encompassing short game, skill development, course management, competition, golf-specific fitness, rules and the broader aspects of the game.
Students represent Como Secondary College in school and community competitions, participate in major junior events, contribute to the wider golf community through volunteering, and learn from experienced professionals.
The program also provides opportunities for interstate travel, competition and mentoring, allowing students to experience different courses, playing environments and pathways within the sport.
Students commit through to Year 12 graduation.
The Specialist Golf Program combines the Western Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education with golf-specific learning, providing students with a broad understanding of their physical, mental and social development alongside the skills and knowledge required to become capable, confident and independent golfers.
Students engage with the SCSA Health and Physical Education curriculum, applying concepts such as movement, physical activity, health, wellbeing, personal development and decision-making within the context of golf and sport.
Golf-specific learning includes:
Through these areas, students are encouraged to become independent learners who understand their own game and take responsibility for their continued development.
Through our partnership with the PGA of Australia and PGA Institute, eligible students can work towards the SIS30421 Certificate III in Sport – Athlete (Golf) while completing their secondary schooling.
The qualification provides students with practical experience and industry knowledge while creating a direct pathway into further study and the golf industry.
Importantly, successful completion of the Certificate III can provide advanced standing towards the PGA of Australia’s Membership Pathway Program (MPP), with the potential to reduce the MPP by one year.
This means students can graduate from secondary school with a nationally recognised qualification and potentially be one year closer to completing their PGA pathway.
Pathways
Graduates leave the Specialist Golf Program with experience, qualifications and a clearer understanding of the opportunities available within golf.
Possible pathways include:
For students interested in pursuing a career in golf, the combination of school-based learning, the Certificate III and advanced standing towards the PGA Membership Pathway Program can provide a valuable head start.

Q: How did the program help you grow as a golfer and as a person?
A: The program helped me not only develop my technical skills and knowledge of the game but also taught me important values like discipline, resilience, and time management. Balancing schoolwork with training pushed me to stay organised and focused, which I know will benefit me both on and off the course. It shaped me into a more well rounded person who can handle pressure and challenges positively.

Q: How did the coaching, facilities, and opportunities at Como Secondary College support your development?
A: The coaching and facilities at Como were outstanding. Having access to quality greens and experienced coaches made a huge difference in my development. Being part of a golf-focused school also meant I could compete in tournaments without worrying about falling behind in class, which gave me more opportunities to perform and improve.

Q: Why would you recommend the Specialist Golf Program to a young golfer?
A: I’d recommend the Program to any young golfer who wants to take their game seriously while still having a strong education. It gives you the best of both worlds; high level coaching and competition, alongside the support of a school that understands what it takes to succeed in sport. You’re surrounded by like-minded people who share the same goals, and it creates an environment where you can really grow as both a golfer and a person.
The closing date for Specialist Programs is Friday 29 May 2026.
All students entering Year 7 in 2028 are welcome to apply from Term 1 2027.
