Welcome back to Term 3. I trust everyone enjoyed a well-earned break and has returned refreshed, re-energised and ready for another busy and rewarding term at Como Secondary College.
As we begin the second half of the school year, our focus for Term 3 is simple: Raising the Bar. High expectations will be paramount in all that we do, whether it be in the classroom, on the sporting field, in our creative pursuits or through the way we conduct ourselves as members of the Como community. Great schools are built on high standards, strong relationships and a commitment to continuous improvement, and we look forward to seeing our students and staff embrace these expectations throughout the term ahead.
It has been an excellent first week back. Our whole-school assembly provided a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate the achievements of our students. Congratulations to all recipients of our Como Way Awards, Good Standing recognition, and Academic Awards. It was particularly pleasing to acknowledge those students who achieved First and Second Class Honours, recognising their sustained commitment to academic excellence. These awards are a testament to the hard work, perseverance and dedication demonstrated by our students, supported by families and staff alike.
A highlight of the week was the Year 12 Sleepout. While the cause was important, the conditions were certainly memorable, let’s just say it was cold! Staff and students spent the night on site to raise awareness of homelessness and to better understand the challenges faced by many people in our community. I am incredibly proud to share that the event raised more than $1,200 for charity. Well done to everyone involved for their generosity, compassion and willingness to step outside their comfort zone in support of others.
This week also saw meetings of both our College Board and P&C. It is always encouraging to sit alongside such committed and passionate people who generously give their time to support our students and our school. Their contribution is invaluable and greatly appreciated. The College Board will soon be seeking a new parent representative. If joining the Board is something you may be interested in, please keep an eye out next week for information regarding the nomination process.
A reminder to families to register for and claim the WA Student Assistance Payment (WASAP) if you have not already done so. This payment provides $250 for every secondary student and is designed to assist families with the costs associated with education, including school supplies, uniforms and other essential items. I strongly encourage all eligible families to access this support and use it to ensure students are well equipped for learning and proudly wearing the College uniform. This funding is a valuable contribution towards the cost of schooling, and I would encourage all families to take advantage of the opportunity. If you have not yet applied, please do so as soon as possible.
Over the past few weeks, I have spoken about The Como Way and the work we need to do to ensure it becomes deeply embedded across every aspect of College life. This is important work that belongs to all of us, students, staff and families. In the coming weeks, I will be sharing further information and seeking feedback from our community. I encourage everyone to engage with this process and contribute their thoughts as we continue working together to make our great College an even greater one.
Finally, on a lighter note, here’s hoping the Eagles can feast on the Dockers tonight! Regardless of where your loyalties lie, enjoy the weekend and thank you for your continued support of Como Secondary College.
