As we reach the conclusion of another remarkable term, I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on the many achievements, opportunities and successes that have shaped the past ten weeks at Como Secondary College.
Our final week has been a fitting celebration of the talent, creativity and determination of our students. The Just Start It Competition showcased the entrepreneurial thinking and innovation that our young people bring to every challenge. The quality of the pitches presented to the judging panel was outstanding, with students demonstrating confidence, preparation and genuine passion for their ideas. We are particularly proud that two student teams have been invited to attend the Gala Event later in July, an exceptional achievement and one that reflects their hard work and commitment throughout the program. I would also like to acknowledge our Year 10 EMITS students, whose efforts exemplary. These students have embraced opportunities to extend themselves academically while developing valuable skills for their future pathways. Their commitment, resilience and determination have been impressive, and they should be extremely proud of their achievements.
Today, we also fittingly celebrated NAIDOC Week with a whole-school assembly that recognised the rich culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students participated in a range of cultural performances and activities that provided opportunities for learning, reflection and connection. I would like to extend a special thank you to our Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers, Natasha Collard and Shaun Hankin, for their continued work in building our understanding, appreciation and recognition of the culture and history of our First Nations peoples. Their dedication enriches our school community and strengthens our commitment to reconciliation and cultural understanding.
The FIFA Club World Cup has also provided plenty of conversation around the College over recent weeks. It has been wonderful to see students and staff from diverse backgrounds gathering before school, during breaks and in classrooms to engage in some friendly banter about the world’s game. Events like these remind us of the unique ability of sport to bring people together across cultures, generations and communities. The shared excitement, spirited discussions and celebration of different nations and teams have added another positive dimension to our school community this term. And on a personal note, the VAR robbed Croatia, so come on the Socceroos!
Families will receive their children’s Semester 1 reports via email. Reports should never contain surprises. Rather, they are an affirmation of the effort, engagement and application demonstrated across the semester. For many students, the results will be a source of great pride and recognition for their hard work. For others, the report provides an opportunity for reflection. Success is not measured solely by grades, but by growth, perseverance and a willingness to learn from challenges. As we look ahead to Semester 2, I encourage all students to review their achievements, identify areas for improvement and set ambitious goals for the months ahead.
Planning for 2027 is also beginning to take shape, with subject selections opening shortly. Following career counselling conversations and discussions with teachers and families, we encourage students to use the holiday period to carefully consider their options. Thoughtful subject choices, aligned with interests, strengths and future aspirations, are an important step in ensuring successful pathways beyond school.
We continue to work closely with the Department regarding our exciting facilities upgrade project. Conversations and planning have progressed positively, and we expect the project to be released for tender within the next month. At this stage, works are anticipated to commence at the end of this year. This development represents a significant investment in the future of Como Secondary College and will provide enhanced learning environments for our students and staff for many years to come.
As I reflect on Term 2, I am reminded of just how much our school community has achieved. Across the term we have celebrated academic excellence, sporting success, student leadership, cultural performances, workplace learning opportunities, community partnerships and countless moments of personal growth. Whether representing the College in competitions, participating in excursions, camps and enrichment programs, showcasing talents on stage, or striving for success in the classroom, our students have embraced opportunities with enthusiasm and pride.
None of these achievements happen in isolation. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our dedicated staff, whose professionalism, care and commitment create the conditions for students to thrive every day. To our parents and carers, thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement and partnership throughout the semester. Most importantly, thank you to our students for the energy, positivity and determination you bring to our College community.
Together, you have made Semester 1 a thoroughly enjoyable, productive and successful period for our College.
I wish all members of the Como Secondary College community a safe, restful and enjoyable holiday break. Take the opportunity to recharge, spend time with family and friends, and return ready for another exciting semester of learning and growth.
