Welcome back everyone and especially the new members of our school community here at Como Secondary College.
The start of a school year is always exciting and a time for reflection.
From the trepidation of our new Year 7 students stepping into a new place filled with unfamiliar faces and very big bodies, to the many other new faces joining us across all year groups, to the anxious parents dropping off their “babies”, and finally to the Year 12s wiping the sleep from their eyes as they begin their final first day of school. It truly is a wonderful time.
And it has been a wonderful start to the year.
We warmly welcome our new Year 7 cohort and all students who are new to the school, and we trust you will quickly feel part of our community. We also welcome new staff who bring fresh expertise and enthusiasm to our school. Alongside this, we welcome new air-conditioning in B and C Blocks (with A Block scheduled for the next holidays), and we welcome what has been the worst kept secret for some time, a $30 million capital investment in our facilities. The Minister for Education, the Honourable Sabine Winton and our local member for South Perth, Geoff Baker MLA, came and visited on Monday to share this great news.
Exciting times lie ahead.
I hope everyone enjoyed a well earned holiday break and quality time with family and friends. Now however, it’s time to get back to business. Reflecting on 2025, it was a truly outstanding year. Forty per cent of our ATAR students achieved a score above 90, with 20 per cent scoring above 95, an exceptional achievement. Beyond this, students gained a range of certificates, represented the state and nation in Hockey and Golf, and we were recognised as a Top School for student achievements in Applied Information and Technology. It was, quite simply, a great year.
As we move into 2026, our student numbers continue to grow, a clear indication that we are doing something right. We are excited about what lies ahead but we also recognise that success does not happen by accident.
Achieving our best requires hard work, discipline and consistency. It requires students to establish strong routines around attendance, organisation and study, and to commit to doing the small things well, every day. Turning up on time, completing work to the best of one’s ability, revising regularly and seeking help when needed are habits that make an enormous difference over time. Talent is important, but effort, perseverance and good habits are what ultimately determine success. We all need to demonstrate Integrity, Care, Ambition and Effort, the Como Way!
At our school, we set high expectations because we believe in our students. High expectations are not about pressure; they are about belief. Belief that every student can grow, improve and achieve more than they thought possible. When students are challenged and supported, they rise to meet those expectations. Our role, as a school community, is to ensure students are both encouraged and held accountable to be the best version of themselves.
This is where partnership is essential. As parents, students and teachers, communication matters. Our young people need to know there is always someone in their corner, encouraging them to aim high and persist when learning becomes challenging. Please connect with teachers via Compass, send an email, ask a question, start a conversation. Together, we can be the fence that allows our children to bounce, grow and thrive. When students feel secure, supported and guided, they flourish.
For those interested in our new facilities, the plans are available to view at the front office. Building is scheduled to commence at the start of next year, and I am pleased to reassure you that great care is being taken to protect our beautiful trees and surrounding flora.
Here’s to a fantastic year ahead, one built on strong routines, high expectations and a shared commitment to getting the very best out of ourselves.
