Science came to life when our Yr 12 ATAR Biology students took their learning beyond the classroom and visited Perth Zoo. Students attended a seminar presented by Zoo staff on homeostasis, the self-regulating process by which biological systems maintain internal stability while adjusting to environmental conditions. They then conducted a behavioural study on thermoregulatory behaviours in endotherms, observing what different species were doing to increase or decrease heat gain.
Thankfully, students managed to maintain their own internal balance, particularly when they got close up and personal with an ectotherm (a Children’s Python) called Marge!
