In last week’s message, I spoke about the importance of expectations, consistency and how we work together to support positive student behaviour. I have been encouraged this week to see some noticeable and positive shifts in student behaviours across the College, and I want to acknowledge the efforts of both students and staff in making that happen. While this momentum is pleasing, it is important that we continue to work together, students, staff and families, to ensure these positive behaviours are sustained and embedded as part of our shared culture.
We finished last week on a real high with our Harmony Day celebrations. It was wonderful to see students and staff wearing traditional dress, sharing food and enjoying a range of performances across the day. Our Chaplain Robyn, along with the Student Services team, did a tremendous job coordinating the event, but the real credit goes to our students for the positivity and respect they showed throughout the day. It was a timely reminder for me and for our whole community, Como Secondary College is a great place to be.
Another reminder of how fantastic our students are, our College is also proud to share that Year 11 student Sumayyah A. has been selected to represent the electorate of Swan at the National Youth Parliament, to be held in Canberra from 16–20 August 2026.
Delivered by the Department of the House of Representatives in partnership with Y Australia, this program brings together 150 secondary school students from across Australia for a five‑day immersive experience, building their understanding of Parliament, public policy and civic participation. We congratulate Sumayyah on this outstanding achievement and wish her every success as she represents both her electorate and our College.
On Monday, our Specialist Golf students were out competing at the Alternative Shot Championship, and it was a very tight contest. Despite challenging on-course conditions, the event produced a highly competitive finish, with three teams tying for first place, requiring a countback to determine the final placings.

Well done to all students involved for their sportsmanship and resilience.
Our Year 9 Outdoor Education students have also been busy honing their rowing and fishing skills. Last week, Million and Chaytan each caught a black bream measuring 40cm and 35cm respectively, before releasing them safely back into the water . A pod of dolphins even decided to join the class, making it a memorable experience for all. It is simple activities like this that remind us of how fortunate we are as a college, to be surrounded by an environment which we can all access and engage in, to enhance learning.
Finally, we are seeing the impacts of Cyclone Narelle today. As a former Pilbara resident, having lived in Exmouth for seven years, I know firsthand how frightening cyclones can be.
The weather has seen numerous cancellations of events, including our Golf Upper and Lower School Championships, Hockey events which our students would have been officiating in and of course Curtin University’s Open Day. Please take care and stay safe.
