As we move through Week 6, it’s been another full and rewarding week at Como Secondary College.
I’m also glad to say, I have finally got this out on a Friday too.
Earlier this week, our students represented the school at the Interschool Swimming Carnival. They competed with pride, determination and great sportsmanship. While it wasn’t quite a David and Goliath story, for a small school we certainly challenged some of the bigger players. Our students can hold their heads up high. It was an excellent effort and they were a credit to themselves and the staff who supported them.
This week has also seen NAPLAN take place for our Year 7 and Year 9 students. I’m pleased to report that everything has run smoothly here in Western Australia, unlike some of the challenges experienced in the Eastern States. NAPLAN is one measure of learning. As important as it is, it is only one part of a much bigger picture. While we want our students to do well, they should never be defined by a single test. At Como, we value success across the board: academic growth, wellbeing, creativity, resilience and contribution to community.
Recently, our Student Council wrote to me with a thoughtful and well‑reasoned request regarding our toilet access procedures. They spoke clearly about their right to access facilities when needed and highlighted the significant amount of learning time being lost under the current process. This is a strong example of student voice in action. As a result, we have listened, and made changes to our school processes. With that said, student voice comes with shared responsibility. These changes rely on everyone doing the right thing so that trust, access and learning time are protected. This is how we grow as a community, by listening, responding and holding one another accountable.
Yesterday, our Student Council also organised a Free Dress Day in support of Radio Lollipop, raising over $450. This is a fantastic result and a wonderful example of leadership, compassion and service. Well done to everyone involved.
This afternoon, we look forward to welcoming prospective students and families to our Open Day. It’s always a pleasure to showcase our learning spaces, our people and the spirit of our college.
Looking ahead to Monday evening, we will be holding an Open School Board Meeting, commencing at 5:30pm. All members of our community are very welcome to attend. Following this, we are hoping to relaunch our P&C, and this is where we really need your support.
The P&C plays an important role in supporting the school and providing a strong parent voice. I encourage you not to make assumptions about what a P&C is or does as this will be different. There are no large financial burdens to manage; rather, this is about advocacy, collaboration and supporting opportunities that benefit our students and our college. Please consider coming along, bring a friend, hear what’s on offer, and see how your ideas, skills and voice could contribute to our shared goals and benefit our children.
And finally, isn’t it great to see the AFL back on our screens. Here’s hoping the Eagles show a few promising signs this season 🤞.
