Dear Parents and Carers
Firstly, apologies for the late update this week.
This week we celebrated National Science Week, with the 2026 theme, “Seeds of Science: Nurturing Science for All.” The theme encourages us to explore how ideas take root, grow and spread, and it was wonderful to see our staff and students embracing that spirit throughout the week. A range of activities took place during classes and break times, including daily quizzes, hands-on challenges and engaging learning experiences that brought science to life across the school. Thank you to our Science learning area and student leaders who helped make the week such a success.
This week also saw meetings of both our School Board and P&C, where we shared the draft of our new Business Plan. This is an important document that will help guide the future direction of Como Secondary College, and I appreciate the thoughtful discussions and feedback already provided. Over the coming weeks, parents and carers will have opportunities to contribute further feedback on both the Business Plan and the ongoing development of The Como Way. These important pieces of work will help shape our shared vision for the future of the College.
I also had my first meeting with our newly established Student Advisory Group. It was fantastic to sit down with a diverse group of students representing a broad range of year levels, perspectives and experiences. The conversation was thoughtful, honest and constructive, and I am looking forward to working closely with the group and hearing more of their ideas throughout the year. Student voice is an important part of our decision-making and school improvement processes.
Congratulations to our Specialist Golf Program students, who were outstanding at the Schools Golf Championships held at Meadow Springs Golf Course. Competing in challenging conditions, our students represented Como Secondary College exceptionally well, producing some fantastic results.
As a school, we were particularly successful in the team events, taking out both the Gross and Nett Teams’ Championships. We also finished Runner-Up and third in the Gross Teams’ Event, an outstanding achievement given the strength of competition.

Congratulations to all students and staff involved in the program. These results reflect the talent, commitment and hard work that continues to make our Golf Program one of the leading specialist programs in the state.
Looking ahead to next week, we are proud to have two Como Secondary College teams competing in grand finals, both aiming to bring home championship titles.

This week was also Communication Week, providing parents, carers and staff with the opportunity to discuss student progress and achievement. While these formal opportunities are important, strong communication between school and home should be an ongoing process. Students are often most successful when they know that families and school staff are working together and maintaining regular conversations about their learning, wellbeing and goals.
One of the things that has stood out to me recently has been the number of students who simply stop to pick up a piece of rubbish and place it in a bin. It is a small action, but one that says a great deal about character, pride and civic responsibility. We often talk about building a positive school culture, and sometimes culture is reflected in the simplest of behaviours.
I suspect many parents reading this may be thinking, “I wish they did that at home!” However, it did make me reflect on how easily we can take positive behaviours for granted. When students consistently do the right thing, we stop noticing because it becomes part of the fabric of who we are as a community. It is often only when those behaviours disappear that we start to wonder what happened and how things changed.
As a school community, we should make a conscious effort to acknowledge these moments when we see them. A quick thank you or a few words of recognition can go a long way. Positive cultures are built when good decisions are noticed, valued and reinforced.
To our students, thank you for being mindful of your surroundings and for taking pride in our College. Your willingness to look after our shared spaces helps make Como Secondary College the welcoming and respectful place that it is. It does not go unnoticed, and it is one of the many reasons we are proud of our students.
Across the College, there has been plenty happening beyond the classroom. Students have been visiting Bentley TAFE and engaging with industry representatives to learn more about future career pathways. Preparations continue for our upcoming Athletics Carnival, with trials and events already underway. Our EMITS and CREATE students have also participated in a range of excursions and enrichment activities, further extending their learning experiences beyond the school gates.
