Welcome back to Term 2.
I hope everyone enjoyed a restful and rewarding break and has returned feeling refreshed, focused and ready for the term ahead.
It was wonderful to see so many parents and carers on site yesterday for our Parent–Teacher Interviews. Strong, open communication between school and home is vital, and these conversations play an important role in ensuring we work together in the best interests of our young people. When families and teachers share insights and expectations, students are best placed to grow academically, socially and emotionally.
Today we held our ANZAC Day Assembly. Unfortunately, a less-than-reliable weather app resulted in our students getting a little wet, and I thank them sincerely for their good humour, maturity and respectful conduct throughout the ceremony. ANZAC Day is about more than reflecting on a moment in history; it calls us to consider the enduring values of service, resilience, mateship and responsibility, and how those values continue to shape our expectations of ourselves and of the society we contribute to today.
This reflection always leaves me asking a question of myself: “What have I done for others recently?” Often, I forget to pause and consider what I contribute, focusing instead on what others do for me. Don’t get me wrong, I am genuinely grateful but I do have to remind myself to reflect on my own actions.
So I pose the same question to each of you: What have you done for others? If you can answer it confidently, that’s excellent. If not, perhaps it’s something to act on.
I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of our hockey students, many of whom recently competed at the National Championships. Representing your state and school at a national level takes commitment, discipline and resilience, and we are incredibly proud of how our students conducted themselves both on and off the field. Their achievements are a reminder of the breadth of opportunity available to students at Como Secondary College when passion meets hard work.
This naturally leads into an important conversation around pathways. These discussions should be happening early and often, at school and at home. Parents and carers, you play a key role in encouraging students to think about what they want to achieve beyond school. What are their interests? Where do their strengths lie? What possible careers connect to those interests?
Equally, students should feel comfortable asking teachers how their learning links to the real world. “Where does this subject take me?” “What careers connect to what I’m learning?” If those connections aren’t clear, ask the question. These conversations matter, and they help students build purpose and direction in their learning.
This afternoon, I am meeting with architects and planners regarding our $30 million school upgrade. Plans continue to be refined, and my focus remains firmly on ensuring this significant investment delivers the greatest possible impact for student learning, engagement and wellbeing. I will continue to keep our community informed, and families are always welcome to come in, view the plans and discuss the progress.
You may also have noticed some recent changes around the front entrance of the school, including new signage and a more visible entry point. These improvements form part of our ongoing work to uplift the site and reinforce Como Secondary College as the school of choice in our local community.
We have a great school, supported by outstanding staff and students. Let’s continue to share that story with pride and confidence.
