Last week I shared information about the new social media laws coming into effect next month, and I want to remind families how important it is to have conversations at home about these changes. These laws will influence how social media platforms verify age and manage young people’s access, and it’s vital that students understand what this means for them. I encourage all parents and carers to take the opportunity to speak with their children about safe, respectful and responsible online behaviour.
This week we have had a change in sounds across the school. Gone are the alarms and boarding-gate-style calls signalling the end of periods and breaks, now replaced with music chosen by our Student Council. The change has been welcomed by students and staff alike, adding a bit of personality and vibrancy to the daily rhythm of school life.
Tonight, we celebrate our Year 12s at our Valedictory Evening at the Octagon Theatre. It is a chance to reflect on the journey of the Class of 2025, acknowledge their achievements, and send them off with pride and good wishes for the next chapter in their lives.
Today we also celebrated the tremendous work of the Stars Program in our school. Its introduction this year has been instrumental in improving attendance and achievement for our Aboriginal female students, and the outcomes speak for themselves. A huge congratulations to everyone involved.
Last week, a group of students attended Try-a-Trade days at TAFE, giving them an authentic insight into what a future in construction might look like. Some students discovered a new passion, while others realised that their path lies elsewhere, both equally valuable learning experiences. Opportunities like these help shape informed, confident decisions about life after school, and we will continue to provide them.
Our Hockey students had a remarkable opportunity this week, taking on the male and female Japanese youth National Teams at the Hockey Stadium. The matches were competitive and showcased the strength of our program. Well done to all players. An outstanding effort against international sides.
Student voice continues to shine at Como. This week I received a comprehensive proposal from students advocating for a Library upgrade. They presented clear reasoning, outlined potential designs, explained the benefits, and demonstrated genuine ownership of the space and its possibilities. It was impressive, thoughtful, and exactly the kind of engaged citizenship we want to see. We will be taking definite steps between now and the end of the year to revitalise the Library.
As we move deeper into Term 4, the pace naturally ramps up. Assessments, tests, final tasks, revision and consolidation of learning are all in full swing. It’s a demanding time, but also a rewarding one as students demonstrate their growth and prepare to finish the year strongly. Please continue to encourage routines at home that support rest, organisation and focus. It makes a world of difference.
