Department of Education Approved Specialist Programs

Department of Education-Approved Specialist Programs

Como offers four long-running and highly successful Department of Education approved specialist programs:

  • Golf
  • Hockey
  • Music
  • Enriched Mathematics, Information Technology and Science (EMITS)

Students who have a passion in these areas can take part in a carefully crafted program designed to extend, enrich and accelerate their development.

Specialist Music Program

Our unique, well-rounded music program provides each year level with a balanced swing band so that students can perform together during class time.

The course gives a thorough grounding for entry into Jazz and Contemporary Music Studies at the Conservatorium of Music (WAAPA) and at the University of Western Australia.

For students with a more industry-oriented focus, the program enables senior students to gain a nationally recognised qualification (Certificate II in Music Industry) which enables them to work in the music industry or continue their studies at a tertiary level.

The Specialist Music Program requires students to effectively manage their time. The program supports academic success as a priority and therefore a position in the Music Program is only granted if the student is committed to their academic studies as well.

Students are expected to remain in the program until they successfully graduate from Como Secondary College in Year 12.

Enriched Mathematics, Information Technology and Science (EMITS) Program

The EMITS program offers students with a passion for mathematics, science and information technology the opportunity to hone their skills in an exciting and challenging way. It’s designed to equip students with a comprehensive toolbox of EMITS-related skills that will further their abilities at a tertiary level – and it’s run through a close relationship with Curtin University.

Como staff utilise a research-based best-practice understanding to meet and extend the needs of the students. Successful applicants will enjoy fast-paced, enriched courses covering real-world aspects of science, mathematics and IT.

EMITS students have their in-school learning experience further extended with activities designed to supplement and extend their skills and knowledge. These include a variety of compulsory structured excursions and competitions in mathematics, engineering, computing, science, robotics and information technology.

EMITS is a program requiring a four-year commitment (Years 7–10). Students then follow an ATAR-bound pathway with the aim of university entrance upon completing Year 12.

Specialist Golf Academy

The Como Golf Academy is dedicated to producing highly skilled career golfers. Golf becomes the central option of study and is carefully integrated with the students’ mainstream school program.

The Golf Academy is designed for students who demonstrate developing golf playing ability. It is essential students can exhibit behaviours that reflect a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn new skills and teamwork. Golf demands excellent co-operation and adherence to complex strategies and tactics, therefore appropriate behaviour is expected at all times.

Coaching is delivered by PGA Professionals from the adjoining Collier Park Golf Course, who draw their well-honed expertise from coaching at state and national level. Golf students have access to all golf facilities at Collier Park including a 27-hole golf course, grass driving range and short game facilities. The Golf Academy also uses state of the art analysis equipment including a Flightscope launch monitor.

The Golf Academy students also complete golf-specific fitness training within the world-class Strength and Conditioning centre at Curtin University. Students undertake study in the areas of nutrition, sports psychology and on-course strategies and tactics to build a healthy, comprehensive sportsperson.

All students who successfully complete the Golf program have the opportunity to achieve:

  • A nationally recognised First Aid Certificate
  • Accreditations under the Australian Institute of Sport’s National Coaching & Officiating Accreditation Scheme
  • Accreditation from the School Curriculum Standards Authority endorsed program – Recreational Pursuits (ADRP)
  • Royal and Ancient (Randa) Rules of Golf Certificate

Upon completion, students have the opportunity to enter the world of golf and pursue a variety of golf-related careers including PGA Professional, coaching and golf operations. The Como Golf Academy and its students frequently win or place highly in State and National titles including the Australian School Teams Championship and the School Sport WA School Teams’ Championship, which they have won a record 15 times.

Hannah Green, the 2019 KPMG Women’s PGA Champion, is a former Golf Academy Captain and the current Golf Academy Ambassador.

Specialist Hockey Academy

Como’s long-established specialist Hockey Academy has a tradition of stellar achievement at both national and international levels. The Academy is designed for students who display developing hockey-playing ability and are willing to incorporate Hockey as a major area of their school studies.

Students receive a diverse hockey-playing experience with a focus on skill development, physical conditioning and game strategy.

All students who successfully complete the hockey program will have the opportunity to achieve:

  • A nationally recognised First Aid Certificate
  • Accreditations under the Australian Sports Commission’s National Coaching & Officiating Accreditation Scheme
  • Hockey-specific coaching and umpiring accreditations under Hockey Australia
  • Accreditation under the School Curriculum Standards Authority endorsed program – Recreational Pursuits (ADRP).

Students are expected to remain in the program until they successfully graduate from Como Secondary College in Year 12.
