Maths
In mathematics students learn to use ideas about number, space, chance and mathematical ways of representing patterns and relationships to describe, interpret and reason about their social and physical world. Mathematics plays a key role in the development of students’ numeracy and assists learning across the curriculum. In year 8 all students essentially receive a similar program. In year 9 students are placed in either of two classes – the Extension Mathematics class or General Mathematics class. In year 10 there are three ability groupings – the Extension Mathematics class, General Mathematics 1 and General Mathematics 2 class. The initial selection of students into the Extension Mathematics class is based on each student's achievement of the Mathematics Outcomes and teacher recommendations. Achievement of the outcomes is determined by continuous assessment through tests, assignments and projects throughout the year. Teachers create programmes of work to suit the ability level of the group so that opportunities in year 11 and 12 and beyond are optimised. In Upper School the following TEE subjects are offered by the Mathematics Department: Foundations of Mathematics, Introductory Calculus and Geometry & Trigonometry in year 11 and Discrete Mathematics, Applicable Mathematics and Calculus in year 12. Wholly School Assessed subjects of Mathematics in Practice and Modelling with Mathematics are also offered. In broad terms only students in Extension Mathematics and General Mathematics 1 pathways in year 10 should consider TEE subjects. Please follow the links to view course outlines. Students from all years are encouraged to participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition which is held early in term three. A high percentage of students achieve Distinction and Credit certificates. Year 11Year 12 |
