Health and Phys.EdThe Courses2007 Athletics Carnival Photos The HPE staff promote enjoyable participation in physical activity and enthusiasm towards living a healthy active life-style. The learning area consists of Physical Education, Health Education, Outdoor Education and Special Physical Education in Year 8, 9 and 10. Our subjects In Year 11 and 12 are; Physical Education Studies, which can be taken as a TEE subject or a Wholly School Assessed subject, Outdoor Education and Physical Recreation. Students involved in these subjects have the opportunity to complete a Certificate III in Sport, Sport and Recreation or Outdoor Recreation as well as a St John’s Senior First Aid Certificate. Outdoor Education students can achieve their Recreation Skippers Ticket. The learning area also promotes a wide range of co-curricular activities. Teams competing in the SSWA Champion Schools Competitions include: Boys and Girls AFL, Boys and Girls Soccer, Senior and Junior Rugby League, Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls, Senior and Junior Hockey and Golf Tournaments and competitions. Our school teams also compete in the Interschool Swimming and Athletics carnivals. Currently we compete in B Division against much larger schools. The HPE Learning Area also has two special sport programs in Golf and Hockey. Both these programs have a long history of success. Golf – The Golf Academy involves approximately 80 students ranging from Years 8 to 12. The practical sessions are conducted by PGA coaches from Collier Park Golf Course. Recently 28 students and 3 staff travelled to Christchurch, New Zealand to participate in the World Schools Golf Challenge. The experience was fantastic as were the results. Hockey – The Hockey Academy involves approximately 120 students ranging from Year 8 to 12. In March 2007, 39 students and 4 staff travelled to the UK to play hockey against and being billeted by a number of English and Scottish schools. Both the boys and girls teams were very competitive and the cultural experience was enjoyed by all. Dance - Dance at Como Secondary College is primarily centered around the Rock Eisteddfod. This is a multi school dance challenge for all Schools in Western Australia, and if we were to win the State Competition we would be invited to compete in the National finals against the entire of Australia. Como Secondary College has an impressive record in this challenge having won the State finals once and come second or third overall many times, as well as having won a multitude of minor prizes over the years. |
