The Program 

The EMITS program offers students of above average ability in the mathematics, science and technology fields an exciting and challenging program of learning to build a solid knowledge and skills base for further university studies.  The successful applicants to the college’s EMITS  program enjoy accelerated and enriched studies of science, mathematics and information technology and are provided with resources and encouragement to apply their knowledge and skills.  The college staff utilize research-based best practices to meet the needs of these gifted students. The curriculum is specially designed to enrich and challenge the students and is linked with Curtin University  to provide additional enrichment opportunities. These activities include incursions and excursions as well as science, mathematics and computing competitions.

Additionally, as a special resource, the EMiTs students have priority access to the mobile computer lab which consists of 28 laptops. When not in use by EMITS classes, this resource is also available to the other students of the school.

EMITS is a program requiring a three year commitment   to fully  develop the students as self-directed learners with exceptional organizational, time-management, decision making and self-evaluative skills

Nationally Accredited

All students enrolled in the EMITS  program who successfully complete their course requirements over three years receive a nationally accredited Certificate I and Certificate II in Information Technology (Applications) which is issued through the local TAFE centre.    Supported by Curtin University  The Como Secondary College EMITS program is endorsed by the Curtin University of Technology School of Science which supports the program with staff and resources.

The EMITS Student  Students who apply for this highly regarded course need to be cooperative and practical in their approach to science and technology learning. Student selection for the program is based on a folio of supporting evidence, in particular, of any scientific endeavours and achievements as well as school reports. Further examples may also include references, merit certificates and projects or models created. Every prospective EMITS student is required to sit an entrance test which assesses the student’s ability in mathematics, science and information technology.

Beyond the College 

Successful applicants to the program have their in-school learning further extended with experiences which are designed to supplement and extend their skills and knowledge.  These include a variety of compulsory, well structured excursions as well as competitions in the mathematics, engineering, computing, science and information technology fields. EMITS students may also get the opportunity to present projects at international student fairs and in the past have participated and excelled at state and interstate robotics competitions. Past EMITS students have won numerous awards and accolades in these national competitions

  • School reference/letter of recommendation by your Year 7 teacher,
  • Most recent school report,
  • Portfolio of academic and related achievements Statement of personal information briefly detailing interest, achievements, future goals and objectives etc
