The Performance

The School of Contemporary Music at Como Secondary College is dedicated to creating and developing a student’s solo and ensemble performance skills to the highest possible level. This commitment was evident when both the Senior Concert Band and The Junior Concert Band were awarded silver medals at the Yamaha School Bands Music Festival in Sydney and the Melbourne School Bands Festival. The high regard for the Como Contemporary Music Program is further evident by repeated invitations to perform for the Perth Jazz Society, various other jazz festivals and at local council and community events.

The program’s focus on performance, enables all students to have the opportunity of witnessing and experiencing not only the local, but state and national tour performances as well.

The Program

The School of Contemporary Music offers the student a specialized music program which examines music in the 20th and 21st centuries.  There is a focus on genres such as Jazz, Rock, Latin, Funk, Blues and Pop.

The program further develops the student’s improvisational and song writing skills as well as their knowledge of music theory.  The course gives a most thorough grounding for entry into jazz and contemporary music studies at the Conservatorium of Music at Edith Cowan University (WAAPA).  All students at our school of music have the opportunity to undertake either tertiary entrance or wholly college assessed music studies. The performance aspect of the course in particular ideally equips and prepares university bound students for their auditions required by the respective universities.

For students with a more industry oriented focus the program enables senior music students to gain nationally recognized qualifications – Certificate I and Certificate II in Music Industry Skills – enabling them to work in the music industry or further continuing their music study at a tertiary leve
